Macklin Kowal is an artist, curator, and theorist based in Athens. He is Founding Director of SubRosa Space, an independent venue and residency for artists working with performance. In operation in the Greek capital since 2018, the space has hosted upwards of thirty artists. Kowal is additionally a PhD candidate in Political Theory at Aristoteleio University of Thessaloniki, where his thesis examines the performative dimensions of contemporary right-wing populism. He has presented his research throughout Europe and North America, in lectures both conventional and performative. His
performance work has been staged in institutional and underground settings, and his written work has been published in both academic and independent press. His latest work, a piece of writing jointly academic and creative, co-authored with Lucille Calmel, recently appeared in formules 22 (Presses Universitaires du Nouveau Monde).
